Big Pedal

Tweedmouth Community Middle School from the 23rd of April to the 4th of May took part in the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scooting challenge, Sustrans Big Pedal. The program inspires pupils, staff and parents to take to two wheels on their journey to and from school. The program aims to raise the awareness of cycling and scooting and its benefits such as; keeping fit, socialising with friends and reducing the traffic in and around the school area.

During the Big Pedal our Green Ambassadors had an early start to record every person that cycled or scooted to school every day. Overall 776 journeys were recorded, with an average of 29% of TCMS students taking part in the Big Pedal. This resulted in TCMS coming 3rd in the North East rankings. Amazingly 61 of our students took part every day for the 10 days and 99 students cycled on mass on Wednesday in order to claim their free Bikers Breakfast. An initiative which we hope to continue to encourage students to keep moving! The Big Pedal entered the classroom with 6G perfecting their graph and data analysis skills, also Years 5’s identifying the hazards they encounter on their journey to school and how to combat these and make their journey safer.

A massive well done to all the students who took part, the Green Ambassadors, Miss Robson and the Kitchen Team for the excellent Bikers Breakfast. Students have already commented on continuing their cycling journeys and getting involved in the next initiative, “Walk to school week” which takes place week commencing 14th May.
